Dear ladies and gentlemen of tumblr, I wrote the following note in August of this year and have intended to post it ever since. I apologize for the delay. In the interim life swept me up for a while and I was too overwhelmed to—what’s the verb I’m looking for?—tumbl. That doesn’t mean I stopped caring about this account though, I have missed the interesting conversations that occur here.

I’m back from my tumblr hiatus and here to talk about Tennyson first:

In the Moated Grange

Lately I’ve rather felt like I was living in a moated grange myself. Mariana, Shakespeare’s neglected lady in Measure for Measure, waits for her lover and pines away in isolation. I haven’t pined away at this point, but I have been waiting a lot lately; at work, at home, at shops. So my patience was wearing thin and driving home one day I said to a friend: “Something has to improve soon! I feel like Mariana waiting in the bloody moated grange”.

This is rather an obscure comparison to make, so unsurprisingly my friend replied “Who? Marianne?” At which point I forgot my impatience and my problems for a while and wondered whether Shakespeare’s Mariana might have been a source of inspiration for Austen’s Marianne in Sense and Sensibility.

Both characters are more than familiar with the waiting game. They pin all their hopes (and I mean all…sexual, financial, emotional) on one man and are disappointed by him in turn.

The Shakespearean influence on Austen is a stretch, but I think it’s also highly probable. She would have been familiar with the play, the situations are not dissimilar, and the names are so close. Could be a coincidence, but I think that Marianne is an exploration into what can happen if a woman has the courage to continue actively participating in life and has people around her who offer support. As a result, Marianne marries a man who truly cares for her—Colonel Brandon—rather than a man who is quite creepy and power-crazed as Mariana does —that man being Angelo in Measure for Measure.

So often what stands out with blazing clarity in what we read is actually what our mind is already been focusing on the whole time.

Yes, my life could be worse, but it could also be so much better. Therefore, I can empathise with your frustration and pain and fear.

If the claim that Queen Elizabeth I personally requested that Shakespeare write a play which portrays Falstaff in love (i.e. The Merry Wives of Windsor) after she saw Henry IV: Part II is accurate, then yes, Queen Elizabeth I and Julius Casear and Abraham Lincoln…all those prolific leaders and artists and celebrities over the centuries have thought intensely about fictional characters in literature and theatre.

How could they not?

The words used in reactions have changed over the years. From “ye gods!” to “Oh, my God” to “OMG” to various keyboard smashes…but all those reactions indicate a certain level of enthusiasm and emotional connection.

Ever since the first scene in which he appeared, I’ve liked Evelyn Napier more than Matthew Crawley. It has nothing to do with their appearances or professions; it’s about their characters. Evelyn’s honesty and earnestness is far more appealing to me than Matthew’s reserve and hesitation. I cannot picture Evelyn continuing any relationship, let alone an engagement, for months and months with one woman while he was clearly in love with another. I cannot picture Evelyn ever being horrified by Mary’s night (hour? twenty minutes?) with Pamuk, as pre-war Matthew would have been had he found out. Matthew & Mary make an excellent couple and I think that the resolution of their relationship’s conflicts with a forthcoming marriage works…but I am deeply annoyed that Fellowes created this wonderful friend and gentleman in the form of Evelyn and then failed to mention him again after Season One. That’s over six years in Downton time Fellowes! What happened to Evelyn Napier?

I love how they included a situation where a guy could’ve gotten raped. People don’t seem to realize that males get raped too. It’s less common, but it happens. That is what sets this campaign apart from others.
